What's on the Driver Theory Test

Forty questions, thirty-five to pass, and every one of them pulled from a bank you can see in advance. The theory test isn't a mystery. It's a syllabus. Here's what's actually in it.

People book the theory test not knowing what shape it takes, then act surprised when the questions aren't the ones their mate warned them about. The format is fixed and public. Learn the format first and the studying sorts itself.

The categories

There isn't one theory test. There's a set of them, one per vehicle group. Category B is the car test, and it's the one the ordinary learner sits. There are separate tests for motorbikes, for trucks, for buses, and each has its own question bank. Book the wrong category and you've paid to prove you can drive something you've no interest in. Book B for the car.

The format

Forty multiple-choice questions on a touchscreen. Each one gives you the question and a set of answers, and you pick. You can flag one you're unsure of and come back to it before you finish, so nothing traps you on question nine while question ten is a gift. There's a practice run at the start to show you the buttons. It doesn't count. Then the real forty begin.

The subjects

The questions cover the rules of the road, traffic and road signs, safe and eco-friendly driving, and a block that catches people every time: stopping distances and how long a car takes to pull up. The cocky ones lose their marks in the stopping-distance questions, because those you can't guess. Forty metres at fifty, and it climbs faster than you'd think. Learn the numbers.

The pass mark

Thirty-five out of forty. That's room for five wrong and no more. It sounds generous until you're staring at your fourth stopping-distance question in a row. You get the result on the spot, printed before you leave. Pass and the cert is yours. Fall short and you rebook, and you pay again.

Where the material lives

The whole question bank is published. The official categories, the sample questions, the lot. There's no excuse to walk in blind and no reward for it either. Study the actual bank, not the version your uncle half-remembers from 2003.
