How to Book the Driver Theory Test

Booking the theory test is the easy part, and people still manage to fall at it. Wrong ID, wrong category, a cert they forgot they'd let expire. Here's how to book it once and sit it once.

You book the driver theory test in advance, pick a centre and a slot, pay the fee, and turn up with the right documents. Miss a step and the centre turns you away, fee gone. None of it is hard. All of it is easy to get wrong in a hurry.

Booking a slot

You book online or by phone, choose the category you need (B for the car), and pick a test centre and a time. Centres are dotted around the country, so you're not tied to one town. Book early. The popular slots go, and a first-time driver waiting three weeks for a date is three weeks not spent starting everything that comes after.

What to bring for ID

You have to prove who you are on the day, and the centre is strict about it. A current passport, or another accepted photo ID from the list they publish when you book. Your PPSN comes into it too. Bring exactly what the booking confirmation tells you to bring, in your own name, in date. Turn up with a photocopy or an out-of-date passport and you've wasted the trip.

The fee

There's a set fee per sitting, paid when you book. It's not a lot in the scheme of learning to drive, but it's per attempt, and it does not come back if you fail or if you no-show. Pay once, sit once, and it's the cheapest the whole process ever gets. Fail and rebook and you're paying it twice for the one cert.

The cert you're booking for

Here's the thing to keep front of mind. You're not booking a test for its own sake. You're booking the certificate that lets you apply for a learner permit. Pass, and the theory cert lands in your account, valid for two years. That cert is what the NDLS (National Driver Licence Service) wants before it issues the permit. No cert, no permit, no legal driving. The test is just how you get the cert.

Book it early, on purpose
