How to Apply for Your Learner Permit

Applying for the permit is a counter job, not a driving job, and the order matters. Theory test, then eyesight report, then the appointment, then the fee. Do it out of order and you'll be making the trip twice.

The learner permit is issued by the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS). The application itself is simple. The trick is turning up with everything already done, because the counter won't do any of it for you.

Step one: pass the theory test

You cannot apply for a first permit without a driver theory test certificate. So that's first. Forty questions, thirty-five to pass, book it online and sit it at a test centre. Learn the real material and the stopping distances that catch the cocky, and it's a week's work, no more. The cert lands and you're clear to move on.

Step two: get the eyesight report

A first car permit needs a signed eyesight report from a registered optician or a doctor. Get it before the appointment, not after. It's a quick vision check against the legal standard, and you carry the signed form to the counter.

Step three: book the NDLS appointment

You book a slot online and go in person to an NDLS centre. They take your photograph and signature there, so there's no fussing with photos beforehand. Bring your proof of identity, your PPSN, your proof of address, the eyesight report, and the theory cert. Everything in one folder. The person who forgets one item is the person going home to get it.

Step four: pay the fee

A first learner permit costs thirty-five euro. You pay it at the counter. That's it for the money side. Once it's paid and the documents check out, the application is done and the permit is printed and posted to you, usually inside a week or so.

Then the clock starts

The day that permit issues is the day a six-month clock starts, and you can't sit the driving test until it's run. So the sooner you apply, the sooner the clock is working for you instead of against you. There's no reward for waiting.
